The physiology and innervation of the right colon (caecum, ascending colon and oral 2/3 of the transverse colon) is different from that of the left colon (splenic flexure, descending colon, and rectosigmoid). The right colon is mainly for storage and absorption and receives its parasympathetic innervation from the vagal nerve. The left colon is mainly a transit organ for defecation at receives its parasympathetic innervation from the sacral segments (S2-S4) of the spinal cord. Accordingly, colonc transit time is usually divided into right and left. Whether this is of clinical significance in SCI remains to be determined.
