| Short Description of Instrument |
The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Depression Inventory 12 (ADI-12) is a 12 item self-rated questionnaire designed to rate depressive disorders in patients who suffer from ALS. This test describes mood, anhedonia, and energy but does not refer to the motor related symptoms seen in ALS.
The ADI-12 was validated against the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV (SCID), as the gold standard for diagnosis of depression.

| Scoring and Psychometric Properties |
Scoring: Scores range from 12 (the best possible) to 48 (worst possible). Scores between 23 and 29 indicate mild depression and scores over 30 indicate severe depression.

| Rationale/Justification |
Strengths: Considers the possibility of progressive physical impairment by excluding statements that require motor functions; brief and high validity; highly correlated with BDI-II.
Weaknesses: Hard to distinguish from apathy.
