Classification
Supplemental: Parkinson's Disease (PD)
Short Description of Instrument
The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) is a 20-item self-rated screening questionnaire based on DSM-III criteria for pathological gambling. The SOGS is the most commonly used instrument to screen for pathological or problem gambling in the general population.
Comments/Special Instructions
This scale is recommended as Supplemental since there is not a PD-specific measure for pathological gambling.
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
Scoring: The SOGS has 20 items that are scored 0 or 1, with a total score of 1-4 suggesting problem gambling and a score =5 suggesting pathological gambling.

Psychometric Properties: This scale has not been validated for use in PD but is valid in non-PD populations. This scale is highly correlated with the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale adapted for Pathological Gambling (PG-YBOCS) and concurrent validity with structured clinical interview for pathological gambling (SCI-PG).
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: validated for use in PD, widely used
Weaknesses: based on DSM-III criteria, not developed specifically for PD
